The guide wanted the men in front so as "to pull us out of the hole". I drew the left-forward position, Karen drew right-side middle. The sitting positions in the boat were assigned by the guide.

We had about eight people per raft plus the guide. Each one had a guide who sat in the back with the large oar-rudder. We were assigned 3-16 foot rubber rafting boats. We finally made it to the open river and filed out, taking our place with the 15 others that had made the trip with us from Charleston. It appeared that the bus wheels had only a few inches of road to spare, so progress was slow. Once underway again, we could look down the mountain through the bus window and see the thickly forested depths below. The down-heading bus had the right-of-way. We did meet a bus coming down the mountain once and had to back down the mountain to the next turnout so it could pass by. The bus began the slow climb to our starting point upon a one lane road with the occasional turnout. Karen and I enjoyed those outings alot and, although we had never rafted like this before, we sucked it up and went, thinking it would be a great experience. And, it was! We drove in our cars for about a hundred miles, deeper into the Appalachian mountains. We arrived at the rafting company's headquarters and rented our rafting gear, met our guides, and clambered onto an old school bus for the trip to the embarkation point. One of the things they did frequently was head to the New River on the occasional Saturdayand white water raft there. The Rehab group was a real team and they hung out together even for non-work things. We were distant from all the family now, and attentions focused upon our careers and the family. Karen was making new friends at work. So, we went on with our lives in Charleston.work, church, raising the boys.life was pretty complete and enjoyable. Karen was hired there and her supervisors soon realized what an excellent nurse they had. It was also where the Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine specialties were located. As part of the job deal, Karen had been promised a job interview in another one of CAMC's hospitals across the river-it was called the General Division I believe. The boys shared a bedroom and had just enough room for their Star Wars toys and their stuffed animals. The move went uneventfully and we took up residence. I had arranged for a small two bedroom townhouse apartment for us on the city's south side near the river. This was a self-move and we rented a large truck and motored out to Charleston, the band of four, Ben, Andrew, Karen, and I. Karen handled the details of this and, before long, we were moving physically from Burlington. Getting settled domestically in Charleston began after the house was sold in Iowa. There are no pictures preserving this event.

The Public Law is squeezed in between an amendment of the Manpower Development and Training Act of 1962 and an amendment to the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 allowing Armed Service person's earnings to be exempt from federal tax earned in any service capacity during the Vietnam War.Īs for my part in celebrating, I worked the entire day and then went for sushi with Sammy to our favorite place in CR. So, as fate would have it, Richard Milhous Nixon is the father of Father's Day. That is, until 1972, when an act of Congress, known as Public Law 92-278, authorized the President to designate the third Sunday in June of each year as Father's Day. Many a President was encouraged to proclaim Father's Day a national observance but they refused to do so. Mother's Day, that May celebration, was acknowledged by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914 as a "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country". Turns out that "the Day" originated back in 1908 in Spokane, WA, when a woman by the name of Sonora Louise Smart established the day to honor her father for his effort in raising his six children by himself following the death of his wife. Happens that father Bill Smart's birthday was June 5 and hence, the holiday, as it eventually became, has a June-ish date. As I sit here in the early hours of the day, thinking on how I spent FD and with whom, I asked myself, "How did all this celebrating begin?" So, I looked in on the Internet with the question, "Where did this day come from?"
